Last month, during its annual gathering known as Strategy World in Las Vegas, the focus was on how digital assets could revolutionize corporate financial statements. However, Bitcoin did not take center stage this year.
Michael Saylor, co-founder and Executive Chairman of the company, continued to promote the cryptocurrency that has significantly impacted his business. Yet this year’s discussions primarily revolved around STRC, their variable-rate preferred share. This observation comes from Lance Vitanza at TD Cowen.
“It seemed like nearly every panel discussion centered on STRC,” remarked Vitanza, managing director of equity research at the investment bank to Decrypt. “For the first time ever, they made it clear that their marketing efforts and ecosystem development are focused there.”
Saylor noted that STRC could appeal to a diverse group of investors including retirees. The product currently offers an annual return of 11.5%, consolidating power among firms capable of either boosting or destabilizing Bitcoin’s largest market through forced sales.
Since concluding last month’s two-day event in Vegas, Strategy has successfully raised over $1.5 billion through STRC offerings—this amount accounts for 33% of STRC’s total market capitalization which includes a $2.5 billion public offering from last year. Recently, Strategy executed its most significant Bitcoin acquisition this year by purchasing more than $1.5 billion worth within a week following STRC sales.
Differing from other preferred shares offered by Strategy, STRC is designed to trade close to its par value of $100. When prices exceed par value, additional shares are issued to increase Bitcoin holdings; conversely if prices fall below par value, dividends can be increased with hopes that demand will push share prices back toward the target price.
During last year’s second-quarter earnings call for Strategy’s performance report Saylor suggested viewing STRC as akin to an “iPhone moment” for consumers interacting with their brand.
A few months later Strive Asset Management—a firm co-founded by Vivek Ramaswamy who is running for governor in Ohio—launched SATA modeled after STRC which currently yields an annual return of 12.75%. Strive itself invested $50 million into Strategy’s product portfolio.
“We had about $140 million available cash just sitting there,” stated CEO Matt Cole when speaking with Decrypt. “I believe we’re looking at a trillion-dollar opportunity ahead; both STRC and SATA will be pivotal moving forward.”
The positioning between Strive and Strategy appears similar regarding enterprise valuations compared against their respective Bitcoin reserves.
An analysis reveals both companies trade slightly above their digital asset inventories when considering market caps alongside debts and cash reserves—indicating issuing common stock for acquiring more Bitcoins no longer significantly contributes towards achieving goals aimed at incrementally increasing Bitcoin per share over time.
Digital Credit
The inception point for Strategic’s collaborative approach with other firms purchasing Bitcoins via STCR emerged during discussions held on stage in Las Vegas according Sam Callahan—the director responsible for bitcoin strategy at OranjeBTC—in comments made during his interview with Decrypt.
This conference marked OranjeBTC as being among first entities unveiling investments into Strategies’ STCR product—with Callahan highlighting an allocation worth $11 million representing a key milestone given they manage approximately 3,723 Bitcoins overall.
With average acquisition costs hovering around$105K per coin he emphasized strategic benefits tied directly into investing within STCR versus traditional fiat currencies or U.S Treasury securities instead.
“We have various expenses such as vendors & taxes all priced using fiat,” he explained further adding “Our belief lies firmly behind bitcoin along side bitcoin-backed securities like STCR—we see them serving better treasury reserve options especially catering short-term liquidity needs.”
OranjeBTC ranks amongst top twenty-five publicly traded holders globally according data compiled by ‘Bitcoin Treasuries’.
