Veteran Whales Offloading Bitcoin in Bulk: Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan Calls This a Strong Bullish Signal

With the ongoing volatility in Bitcoin’s pricing, Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise, has made notable remarks suggesting a pivotal transformation in market behavior.

Hougan pointed out that the key distinction between the current market cycle and previous ones lies in Bitcoin’s process of “ownership transition.”

He explained that long-time investors, often referred to as “old whales,” who acquired Bitcoin at significantly lower prices years ago are now viewing current price levels as an opportunity for profit. Although their selling activities may introduce temporary downward pressure on prices, Hougan believes this is indicative of a healthy market cycle.

“Institutional Treasuries Are Acquiring Bitcoin from Seasoned Whales”

A crucial assertion made by Hougan is that the positions left by these whales are increasingly being filled not by individual traders but rather by large institutional entities. Following the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs, there has been a surge in demand for BTC from pension funds, asset management firms, and corporate treasuries.

This shift in ownership dynamics is viewed by Matt Hougan as a positive long-term indicator. He contends that institutional investors typically possess stronger hands and tend to retain their assets with long-term strategies in mind. The prevailing imbalance between supply and demand favoring institutional players is vital for determining Bitcoin’s future valuation.
