Bitcoin’s decentralized finance, often referred to as BTCFi, is heralded as the next frontier for the leading cryptocurrency. Yet, research indicates that Bitcoin holders are largely disengaged from this emerging sector.
A survey conducted by GoMining, which included over 700 participants from North America and Europe, revealed that 77% of Bitcoin owners have never interacted with a BTCFi platform. Only slightly more than 10% have tried it once or twice, and a mere 8% actively utilize BTCFi services for generating yield or lending purposes.
This survey underscores a significant gap between the potential of BTCFi and its actual adoption among users.
“There is substantial interest in these opportunities, but the industry has developed solutions tailored to crypto enthusiasts rather than everyday Bitcoin users,” stated Mark Zalan, CEO of GoMining.
The data reflects this interest: while 73% of respondents are keen on earning returns through lending or staking their Bitcoin holdings and 42% seek liquidity without selling their assets outright. Nonetheless, caution prevails as over 40% indicated they would allocate less than one-fifth of their assets to BTCFi products due to concerns about trustworthiness and complexity.
Awareness Gap
Perhaps most notably is how under-the-radar this industry remains. The study found that an astonishing 65% of Bitcoin holders could not identify even one BTCFi project by name.
Despite significant venture capital investment into these platforms—BTCFi seems primarily focused inwardly rather than engaging with its intended audience effectively enough yet according reports
