Tether’s CEO, Paolo Ardoino, recently expressed a bold sentiment on X, stating that “Bitcoin and Gold will outlast any other currency.” This succinct declaration reflects Tether’s strategic approach to managing its reserves over the past couple of years.
On May 17, 2023, Tether announced a plan to allocate up to 15% of its net realized operating profits towards purchasing Bitcoin for its reserves. This decision was aimed at bolstering their financial stability by adding BTC as a long-term asset rather than directly backing USDT in circulation.
Bitcoin and Gold: Dual Foundations
Gold complements Bitcoin in this strategy. Tether issues tether gold (XAUt), which is supported by allocated gold bars. As of June 30, 2025, over 7.66 tons of metal backed these tokens. Furthermore, according to CoinDesk on September 5, 2025 — referencing the Financial Times — Tether has been exploring investments throughout the gold industry from mining to refining as part of a diversification strategy.
Ardoino has previously grouped these assets together rhetorically. On September 7th he mentioned Bitcoin alongside gold and land as hedges against economic uncertainty while refuting claims that Tether sold BTC for more gold acquisition; emphasizing their commitment towards expanding their Bitcoin holdings.
The recent brief statement serves more as an affirmation than a policy change — highlighting Bitcoin’s role as an asset acquired through profits and positioning gold via tokenization along with potential upstream ventures while maintaining most reserves in liquid assets like U.S Treasurys per attestations provided earlier reports suggest no major shifts yet but upcoming reserve disclosures expected later this month or early next may reveal changes regarding allocations into BTC & Gold.
As reported on Sunday at around UTC time (8:10 p.m), MarketWatch data indicated that year-to-date figures showed the U.S dollar index (DXY) had decreased by approximately -8.88%, whereas both bitcoin (BTC-USD)& gold (XAU-USD) had risen significantly by 22&46&semi79% and 52&46&semi91% respectively.
