Changpeng Zhao, the co-founder of Binance, shared with CNBC on Friday his belief that bitcoin is set to defy its traditional four-year cycle this year, largely due to the increasing acceptance of cryptocurrencies in the U.S. and other nations.
“Predicting bitcoin’s price movement day-to-day is nearly impossible,” Zhao explained when asked by Andrew Ross Sorkin from Squawk Box about his outlook for BTC this year. “However, if you consider a longer timeframe—five to ten years—the trajectory is clear: it will rise.”
The CNBC host referenced Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood’s recent prediction that bitcoin could reach anywhere between $300,000 and $1.5 million by 2030 and mentioned others who expect new all-time highs within this year. In response, Zhao expressed strong confidence in a potential supercycle occurring soon.
“Bitcoin typically operates on four-year cycles […], but given how supportive the U.S. has become towards crypto—and many other countries following suit—I believe we might break out of that pattern this year,” he said. He anticipates BTC reaching unprecedented peaks despite the next halving event not scheduled until April 2028; historically, price surges happen 14 to 18 months after such halvings.
Zhao also revealed spending considerable time advising various governments on cryptocurrency regulations. “I’ve been engaged extensively with around half a dozen governments discussing frameworks for crypto regulation, tokenization processes, and stablecoin policies,” he noted.
During a panel at the World Economic Forum Davos 2026 held just days earlier, CZ mentioned ongoing discussions with approximately twelve countries about asset tokenization initiatives—though he did not specify which nations or assets are involved. The objective behind these talks is to help countries raise capital by selling fractional ownership stakes in state-owned enterprises directly to citizens or investors—a strategy similar to past sales involving national oil companies or telecom providers.
In his interview from Davos with Squawk Box, Zhao highlighted what he perceives as an emerging global political shift favoring digital assets: “This growing pro-crypto sentiment worldwide benefits both our industry and America itself.”
Finally, Zhao touched upon his personal ventures stating he remains very active professionally as things continue accelerating for him personally. He described working on an educational platform called Giggle Academy and collaborating with an investment group named YZi Labs. Additionally, he mentors several founders within the BNB Chain ecosystem—not primarily as an investor but more so providing guidance: “We’re minority stakeholders; my role is mainly mentorship.”
