Metaplanet: The Bitcoin Treasury Firm That Resembles a \’Classic Bubble\’

Bitcoin (BTC) has gained popularity as a treasury asset, particularly following the example set by Michael Saylor’s business intelligence company, Strategy. The significant unrealized profits associated with Bitcoin have likely attracted the attention of Metaplanet, a Japanese firm often referred to as “Japan’s MicroStrategy,” encouraging them to adopt a similar strategy.

The Surge in Metaplanet’s Stock Price Indicates Potential Instability

Since starting its Bitcoin accumulation in April 2024, Metaplanet has ascended to become one of the top ten holders of BTC worldwide. However, data from CryptoQuant indicates that this impressive rise may be approaching an imminent downturn.

An examination of Metaplanet’s stock performance reveals an astonishing increase of 4,500% since its initial investment in Bitcoin. This growth peaked around mid-2025 and is now showing signs of decline. It exemplifies the “classic bubble” phenomenon where rapid growth is followed by an equally swift collapse.

The stock chart suggests that the asset’s price escalated too rapidly and may no longer be sustainable. If this trend continues, we could see either a significant crash or substantial correction soon, which would likely increase selling pressure among Metaplanet shareholders.

Currently holding 20,136 BTC, the company faces critical decisions regarding whether to slow down its Bitcoin purchases or maintain its ambitious goal of reaching 100,000 BTC by late 2026.

Metaplanet CEO Advocates for Exclusive Focus on Bitcoin

In late August 2025, Metaplanet made headlines by becoming the first firm focused solely on Bitcoin treasury management to be added to the FTSE Japan Index.

This inclusion in such a prestigious global index is noteworthy as it could facilitate capital movement from traditional markets into Bitcoin investments.

Recently, Simon Gerovich—the CEO of Metaplanet—asserted that their strategy will concentrate exclusively on Bitcoin akin to Strategy’s approach. He emphasized that their objective is to amass sufficient amounts of Bitcoin so they can achieve “escape velocity,” positioning themselves ahead where competitors cannot keep pace.
