This week, Tether, a leading stablecoin company, revealed a $250,000 contribution to OpenSats aimed at aiding Bitcoin developers. However, this gesture was met with criticism from one of the most renowned programmers and staunch Bitcoin supporters.
Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Square, mocked the donation on X shortly after Paolo Ardoino, Tether’s CEO publicized it.

Tether stands as one of the crypto sector’s most lucrative enterprises. The issuer behind USDT reported an impressive $13 billion profit last year and is reportedly in discussions with potential investors for a valuation reaching $500 billion.
The donation to OpenSats is intended to bolster their efforts in developing free and open-source Bitcoin software by supporting their operations and grant distribution activities.
A representative from Tether did not provide any comments regarding Dorsey’s remark when approached by Decrypt, nor did Ardoino address it publicly.
Soon after Dorsey’s comment surfaced online another user on X questioned his own financial support towards safeguarding Bitcoin developers asking about his contributions.

Dorsey’s Start Small initiative had indeed donated over $21 million to OpenSats in 2024. As an outspoken proponent for decentralized technology and resistance against censorship he remains one of Bitcoin’s prominent advocates.
However even Jack wasn’t without critics Udi Wertheimer creator behind popular project Taproots Wizards initially sided with him but later turned against him.
“No one should engage in competition with Jack regarding funding open-source development,” said Wertheimer.
The Bitcoiner then criticized Dorsey for investing into Ocean—a mining pool previously criticized discouraging non-financial transactions including NFT-like Ordinals creation—suggesting that capital slows down progress instead helping advance it further than anticipated before now happening today tomorrow forevermore until end times come upon us all someday soon enough eventually perhaps maybe
