In 2025, gold’s remarkable ascent has caught the eye of investors, with seasoned analyst Ed Yardeni dubbing it the “new bitcoin.”
Yardeni contends that in times of escalating geopolitical tensions, gold has proven to be a more reliable refuge than bitcoin.
“While bitcoin is often referred to as ‘digital gold,’ we see gold as ‘physical bitcoin,'” Yardeni noted. He emphasized the enduring stability of gold compared to bitcoin’s relatively brief and volatile history. This perspective was shared in a recent report from Yardeni Research highlighted by CNBC.
The statistics support his viewpoint: Gold has soared approximately 60% this year, whereas bitcoin’s increase hovers around 20%. Recently, while gold climbed nearly 4%, bitcoin declined by 9%, and the Nasdaq saw a slight dip of about 1%.
Currently valued at over $4,200 per ounce, gold was priced at roughly $2,600 an ounce just one year ago.
This surge can partly be attributed to President Trump’s threats against China regarding trade issues. His warnings included potential bans on Chinese cooking oil amidst ongoing disputes over soybeans and other commodities.
This situation heightens economic uncertainty in the U.S., driving investors towards gold for its safe-haven qualities.
Yardeni Highlights Bitcoin’s Liquidity Challenges
According to Yardeni, liquidity issues have contributed to bitcoin’s downturn. Recent market liquidations amounted to about $19 billion due to leveraged positions being unwound and market spreads widening as a result.
