Brad Garlinghouse Claims Ripple Aims to Challenge SWIFT, Asserts XRP Represents a Revolutionary Shift in Digital Currency

Current conversations on crypto Twitter highlight the fact that global payment systems are still reliant on antiquated frameworks, and $XRP is being developed to bridge this gap.

The Limitations of Traditional Wire Transfers

During a recent conference, Ripple’s CEO Brad Garlinghouse offered a sharp critique of the existing financial infrastructure. He didn’t just focus on SWIFT transactions; he also examined why these methods feel fundamentally outdated.

“I assume everyone here has engaged in a transaction via SWIFT… commonly referred to as a wire transfer.”

“The term ‘wire transfer’ originates from telegram wires… this technology hasn’t evolved alongside the internet.”

This observation resonates deeply as it underscores how antiquated the system truly is. While communication has advanced from letters to instant messaging, international payments continue to depend on frameworks established many years ago.

Ripple’s Vision: Enabling Money Movement Like Data Transfer

Garlinghouse emphasized that their mission goes beyond merely competing with banks or SWIFT:

“Are we in competition with SWIFT? Absolutely… but fundamentally, what Ripple aims to achieve is allowing value to flow as seamlessly as information does today.”

Currently, transferring money across borders can take several days and involve numerous intermediaries while incurring hefty fees. Ripple envisions enabling instantaneous money transfers akin to sending an email or message.

A Comparison with Early Internet Challenges

Simplifying his point further, Garlinghouse likened today’s financial landscape to the nascent stages of the internet:

“I had accounts with Prodigy and AOL… there was also CompuServe.”

“And here’s where it gets tricky: you couldn’t send emails between CompuServe and AOL… that simply wasn’t feasible.”

<p.In those days, platforms functioned as isolated ecosystems. This mirrors how current payment networks operate—disjointed, sluggish, and lacking full interoperability.

Through $XRP , Ripple seeks to initiate an “internet moment” for currency where value can traverse networks effortlessly without barriers.
