A multitude of specialists are actively working to disprove the notion that Adam Back, a veteran of the cypherpunk movement, is the mysterious creator following a shocking investigation released by the New York Times.
In contrast, former CEO of Mt. Gox, Mark Karpelès, has expressed his belief that it is a shared responsibility within the community to safeguard Satoshi’s anonymity.
The “ideal figure”
Karpelès asserts that it is imperative for those in the cryptocurrency space to ensure Satoshi’s true identity remains concealed.
“Anyone who values Satoshi should act accordingly and mislead anyone attempting to uncover his real identity. I dare say this is an obligation for everyone engaged in crypto. Satoshi opted for obscurity; you must assist him,” he stated in a recent post on social media.
He argues that maintaining this secrecy is crucial for the stability of the entire asset class. “A mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto represents an ideal figure,” he elaborated. “Revealing who lies behind this persona would compromise its perfection and likely impact [the] value of cryptocurrencies globally. This serves as yet another reason for all participants to guard this secret.”
The Adam Back hypothesis
Following an article from a journalist known for exposing fraud at Theranos, industry experts contend that John Carreyrou’s 18-month investigation lacks any conclusive evidence.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis has highlighted how Back currently struggles to gather funding from venture capitalists while wallets attributed to Satoshi contain approximately $70 billion worth of assets. This contradiction has led Ripple’s CTO David Schwartz to speculate that Satoshi’s cryptographic keys may be irretrievably lost.
Joe Weisenthal from Bloomberg remarked on how Back’s present position at Blockstream does not align with expectations one might have regarding Bitcoin’s creator: “Would someone like Satoshi establish a Bitcoin treasury firm? It seems incredibly difficult to envision,” Weisenthal commented. He humorously suggested that if someone were indeed Satoshi and desired an impeccable cover story, starting such a prominent corporate entity would be an excellent strategy to divert attention away from them.
No matter if Back is executing an elaborate deception or merely navigating through scrutiny as a pioneering cypherpunk, Karpelès’ message remains evident: The legend surrounding Satoshi Nakamoto holds far greater significance within the cryptocurrency realm than any individual behind the alias could ever possess.
