The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has unveiled a comprehensive new document that articulates its guiding principles, priorities, and long-term vision for managing the second-largest blockchain network in the world.
Released on Friday, the 38-page “EF Mandate” positions Ethereum—whose ether (ETH) token ranks just below bitcoin BTC$71,859.13 in terms of market value—as a technology aimed at safeguarding individual liberties within an increasingly centralized digital landscape. It outlines key principles that the nonprofit organization believes should direct its development efforts.
This publication arrives during a pivotal moment for the foundation, following recent changes to Ethereum’s technical roadmap and the departure earlier this year of one of its co-executive directors.
“The Ethereum Foundation is recognized as the original steward of the Ethereum initiative,” states the document. “However, we are neither parents nor rulers over Ethereum; we do not embody ‘the system’ itself.”
A fundamental theme within this mandate is self-sovereignty, which EF identifies as central to Ethereum’s mission.
“Our primary objective is to ensure that Ethereum remains a decentralized and resilient instrument for self-sovereignty,” asserts the manifesto. “The foremost principle is that users retain ultimate control over their identities, assets, actions, and representatives.”
To uphold this aim, EF emphasizes four essential characteristics that must remain integral to Ethereum’s evolution: censorship resistance; open-source accessibility; privacy; and security—collectively referred to as CROPS.
“We assert that these attributes—CROPS—must persist as an inseparable whole in all developmental priorities concerning Ethereum,” declares the mandate.
The foundation also indicated it will gauge its long-term success by how redundant it becomes over time. For now, it will concentrate on initiatives unlikely to be pursued by other participants in the ecosystem—including extensive protocol research and public-goods security work while facilitating collaboration among development teams.
Once these responsibilities can be assumed by others within the broader ecosystem, EF intends to take a step back from active involvement.
“Our ambition is to diminish our relative influence gradually,” stated team members. “This process of subtraction signifies ensuring maturity for Ethereum: fostering growth alongside decentralization robust enough to surpass us.”
The document further contextualizes blockchain technology within an ecosystem characterized by open technologies supporting free and decentralized systems. The EF envisionsEthereum as part of an “infinite garden,” representing an ever-expanding network comprised of builders communities striving towards maintaining open digital infrastructure resilience.
“The World Computer serves as decentralized infrastructure enabling permissionless computation communication association,” affirms this mandate statement.
