Segregated Witness (BIP 1411)
A typical Bitcoin transaction identifies its inputs through output indices linked with transaction IDs (TXIDs). This ensures each input can be distinctly recognized and verified as never having been previously spent.
Prior to implementing Segregated Witness, transaction structures appeared as follows:

The TXID represents a hash derived from this data. However, ScriptSig components—including signatures or hash preimages that validate transactions—are included within inputs themselves. The Lightning Network alongside systems like Ark, Spark, BitVMs,and Discreet Log Contracts rely heavily on pre-signed transactions requiring unsigned funding transactions followed by multiple signed agreements ensuring secure execution before confirming funding operations. These frameworks utilize multisignature authentication methods designed specifically against double-spending risks—which will be pivotal later on.
If any malleation occurs during propagation across networks altering funding TXIDs prior confirmation into blocks renders all associated pre-signed transactional guarantees void; thus none function effectively where potential tampering exists during transmission stages.
To counteract this vulnerability Segregated Witness employs an undefined opcode acting similarly towards obscuring previous ScriptSig positions while relocating all relevant data into newly created fields termed “witness.” Consequently transforming traditional structures into:
