On Friday, Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, revealed that he has distanced himself from the Future of Life Institute (FLI), an organization that received a donation of $SHIB tokens from him back in 2021.
Initially, Buterin was attracted to the institute’s comprehensive plan aimed at mitigating existential threats related to artificial intelligence, biological risks, and nuclear dangers. This broad vision played a significant role in his decision to donate Shiba Inu ($SHIB) tokens.
However, he noted that FLI has since shifted its focus towards cultural and political advocacy concerning AI risks. He expressed concern that this new direction diverges significantly from the original strategy presented during his donation.
“I am concerned that large-scale coordinated political efforts backed by substantial financial resources can lead to unintended consequences and provoke backlash,” he stated. “Such approaches may address issues in ways that are both authoritarian and fragile—even if such outcomes were not initially intended.”
Buterin voices concerns over FLI’s evolving strategies
The Future of Life Institute aims to minimize extreme risks while guiding transformative technologies for humanity’s benefit.
The organization asserts on its website: “We require policies ensuring AI development enhances lives globally rather than simply increasing corporate profits.”

Nevertheless, Buterin criticized some proposals put forth by FLI which suggest implementing safeguards within biosynthesis devices and AI systems designed to prevent harmful outputs.
“I consider this approach quite fragile; there are numerous methods available for bypassing or fine-tuning such restrictions,” he remarked.
A request for comments was sent to FLI by Cointelegraph but no response had been received at the time of publication.

The $500 million cash-out from $SHIB
<pIn 2021, Buterin found himself with substantial amounts of $SHIB, along with other dog-themed cryptocurrencies as developers sought to leverage his name for marketing purposes. He subsequently directed part of these tokens toward charitable initiatives.
The Future of Life Institute was among those organizations benefiting from Buterin’s donations; however, he admitted he did not anticipate their value would soar close to half a billion dollars.
“I assumed they would only cash out between $10-25 million because I didn’t believe the $SHIB‘s market could support more,” he explained. “Instead, they managed an impressive cash-out amounting approximately $500 million.”
